In a basement bar, locals gather to play make believe. This is a community event hosted by The Alpine, in Toronto, ON, where strangers play a one-night-only game of Dungeons & Dragons. Sometimes people come alone, knowing no one. Sometimes they come in groups. But often, the same people come back, and see the same faces, and remember each other. In a city that isn’t always very kind to human connection, in a world that doesn’t always leave room for adults to play, this place is precious. But it was almost lost when crumbling city infrastructure nearly toppled The Alpine.
