The Art of Vintage
Laurissa Cebryk, Calgary, AB
When The Art of Vintage, Calgary’s last-standing typewriter repair services shop, closed in early 2024, it seemed the city’s typewriter enthusiasts were out of luck with their machines. Then Bart Habermiller entered the picture. This story dives into the Art of Vintage with retiring owner, Heather Oliphant, and how she’s keeping typewriters alive by passing on years of precious repair knowledge to a new “apprentice.” With analog growing in popularity, services like typewriter repair shops are critical components of a city’s fabric, keeping vintage wares—and their decades of history—out of the landfill.
Growing up, I always had a love for writing—The world is full of interesting people doing incredible things, and I LOVE capturing their stories and telling the world. After attending journalism school at the University of British Columbia, my love of writing expanded into a general love of storytelling. In particular, I found great joy in researching, writing, recording, and producing audio pieces, and completed a podcast series as my masters thesis. When I’m not working, you can find me typing on my 1955 Underwood 150 typewriter, snowboarding, surfing, hiking, or hanging out with my wiener dog, Rooster.
