Illiterate Man Transcends Time
Karim Mosna, Guelph, ON
In the 19th century, a man who was initially illiterate with minimal education went on to publish three novels with elaborate poems that are very relevant today, speaking to our present issues notably environmental degradation and the impacts of colonialism. Guelphite Thomas Laidlaw's work is recited in this piece by local performer Jay Wilson including excerpts of: "Our Fathers Where Are They," and "The Cutting Of The First Tree in Guelph." The piece concludes with Laidlaw's masterpiece "To The River Speed" recited in full.
